The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing back another familiar face after reuniting with both safety Marcus Epps and offensive tackle Fred Johnson.
“The Eagles have re-signed Britain Covey,” 94WIP’s Eliot Shorr-Parks wrote on X/Twitter with a video of Covery at practice.
Covey returns to Philly after spending the offseason with the Los Angeles Rams. Unfortunately, he did not make it through cutdown day on Tuesday.
Covey initially entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2022 out of the University of Utah and signed with Philly. Covey carved out a key role as the Eagles’ primary punt returner over the years, though a shoulder blade injury kept him sidelined for much of last fall. He finished the 2024 regular season returning six punt returns for 46 yards through five games. He also saw some action on offense and hauled in seven catches (on eight targets) for 34 yards.
When Covery broke his scapula (shoulder blade) in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints and was placed on injured reserve, the Eagles turned to then-rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean to fill his shoes at punt return throughout the year.
Similar to the Eagles’ safety situation and their reunion with Epps, the Eagles are still lacking a clear answer at punt returner, though they can’t lean on DeJean again this year.
The Eagles attempted to give the job to either Ainias Smith or Avery Williams, but neither impressed enough to make the 53-man roster. That led to the Eagles taking full advantage of LA’s roster cuts and bringing back someone who didn’t let them down.
