Culture Reboot in Colorado: Avalanche Bring Back Franchise Legend Milan Hejduk in Surprising Leadership Role to Mentor Young Core and Fuel Another Stanley Cup Run in 2026

Posted on May 27, 2025 by emma

DENVER — In a move that blends tradition, leadership, and long-term vision, the Colorado Avalanche have announced the return of franchise legend Milan Hejduk in a new front-office and mentorship role aimed at guiding the team’s rising stars and reinforcing a championship mindset ahead of the 2026 NHL season.

Hejduk, one of the most beloved figures in Avalanche history, returns as Special Advisor to Hockey Operations and Player Development, a newly crafted position that gives him direct access to both the locker room and front-office decision-making. Known for his consistency, professionalism, and offensive brilliance during his playing career, Hejduk is expected to provide invaluable mentorship to the team’s young core.

“This is about more than nostalgia — this is about identity,” said Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland. “Milan was a quiet warrior on and off the ice. He knows what it takes to win in Colorado, and he understands the character and discipline that has always defined this franchise at its best.”

Hejduk, who spent his entire NHL career in Denver and served as team captain, won the Stanley Cup with the Avs in 2001 and the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2003. While he’s remained active in the local hockey community and in youth development, this marks his most direct return to the Avalanche organization since retiring in 2013.

With cornerstone stars like Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon, and Mikko Rantanen continuing to lead the charge, the Avalanche are aiming to maintain their championship window. But with several younger players rotating into bigger roles — and the team adapting post-Gabriel Landeskog injury era — Hejduk’s presence will help bridge the gap between elite talent and everyday professionalism.

“I’m excited and humbled to be back,” Hejduk said during the announcement at Ball Arena. “This organization gave me everything, and now I want to give back. My role is to help these guys grow into champions, not just with their talent, but with their preparation, attitude, and love for the game.”

Hejduk’s appointment also comes at a time when the Avalanche are seeking to reinforce their culture — balancing skill with accountability, and flash with fundamentals. His return is seen as a grounding presence, a reminder of the legacy players wear each time they put on the Avalanche sweater.

As training camp approaches and Colorado once again sets its sights on a deep playoff run, the return of Milan Hejduk provides the locker room with a quiet but powerful spark — the kind that comes only from someone who’s been to the top of the mountain.
