“I have been crying since yesterday due to what the doctor said about my injury”: Arsenal midfielder Declan reveals what the doctor told him about his injury which made him shed tears yesterday

Declan Rice has broken his silence on social media after picking up an injury in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Eberechi Eze’s first-half strike against his former club ensured Mikel Arteta’s side would reestablish their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

Defeats for Man City and Liverpool meant the Gunners extended their lead over their title rivals, with Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland making up the rest of the top-four.

It was a vital win for the Gunners who are now grinding out results, but the three points may have come at a cost with William Saliba, Rice and Gabriel Martinelli all picking up injuries against the Eagles.

Speaking after the match, Arteta said: “Well, the first one was Willy that obviously had to be out after the first half, Declan as well was struggling from the first half with a knock that he took, and who was the other one? Ricky. As well. So yeah, let’s see how that will go.”

He added: “On Willy there are two things related to his substitution and with Declan I don’t really know because it was a knock. But I don’t know if it was the calf or the Achilles or what exactly it was.”

However, Rice appeared to be in good spirits after the game, sharing three images on his Instagram story celebrating the win.

On the first post, the England international shares a photo of him celebrating after the final whistle, accompanied with the message: “+3 against a tough opponent. Let’s keep building [brick emoji].”

Rice then shared a graphic from the official Arsenal Instagram account, which has the caption of the infamous chant: “One-nil, to The Arsenal,’ adding his own three word message: “Onto the next [loveheart emoji]”

His third and final story post after the game, is an image of Rice in action swinging a set piece into the box.

As a result of the win over Palace, Arsenal are now six points clear of Manchester City and Manchester United, while Liverpool are now seven points adrift following their defeat to Brentford.

When asked about his title rivals dropping posts, Arteta said in his post-match press conference: “No, I wasn’t aware. I just found out at the end of the game, I think most of the players as well.

“They’re not allowed their phones at half-time, so hopefully they didn’t know about it, maybe through the staff. But yeah, I think I’m really positive.

“We came forward especially because we did what we had to do, and then it shows you the difficulty of the league and how complicated it is to win games.”

A win is a win, and on Sunday afternoon Arsenal picked up another 1-0 victory to maintain their grip on top spot in the Premier League.

In the 39th minute, Eberechi Eze struck against his former club, firing confidently into the bottom-right corner to give Arsenal the lead. His goal proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s side once again protected a narrow advantage with composure, just as they did in their 1-0 win against Fulham.

While every Gunner played their part in the win, Gabriel Magalhães was the standout performer.

    Big Gabi’s warrior display

By Friday, reports had suggested Gabriel hadn’t trained after limping off against Atlético Madrid with a knock, leaving his participation in doubt. But when the line-ups dropped, there he was – starting and ready for battle.

Gabriel delivered a performance full of authority and commitment. He was rock-solid defensively and a major threat in the opposition box, rattling the crossbar with a towering header from a corner.

The numbers back up his brilliance: 105 touches, 90 per cent passing accuracy, five duels won from nine, six clearances and one interception. It was the complete defensive performance.

Football London praised his anticipation and timing, writing:

“Produced a fine couple of sliding interceptions, particularly from an Ismaïla Sarr shot after a turnover of possession. He looked like he got a touch on the cut-back, but the powers that be deemed it to have come off a Palace player.”

    The Evening Standard added:

“Passed a late fitness test and showed his importance. Made a few big blocks and hit the crossbar from a set-piece.”

London World summed up his resilience perfectly:

“Always prepared to sacrifice his body for the team, taking a chunk of the goal post in his crotch during the second half. Unlucky not to bag himself another goal from a set play, hitting the crossbar with a good header.”

Gabriel was, without question, one of Arsenal’s standout figures in the hard-fought win over Crystal Palace – a true warrior in red and white.

BREAKING NEWS: Arsenal player sustained an ACL injury against Crystal Palace yesterday and will be out for six months

Eberechi Eze scored against his former club as the Gunners secured another clean sheet, but the result was overshadowed by some injury concerns.

Overall, three Arsenal players picked up injuries during the Premier League clash, being forced off due to knocks of varying severity.

Declan Rice, William Saliba, and Riccardo Calafiori all picked up injuries, the Spanish manager confirmed.

Speaking after the game, Arteta said: “William Saliba felt some pain. Declan was the same.

“The first one was Willy [Saliba], he was out from a knock that he took. And Ricci [Calafiori] too. I don’t know how bad the injury is], not because I don’t want to tell you – but because I don’t really know.

“On Willy, there are two things related to his substitution. With Declan I don’t really know because it was knock, whether it was a calf or an Achilles.

“[Gabriel] Martinelli said he felt something, we do not know if it is a muscular issue or not.”

Arsenal are now first in the Premier League table on 22 points, four ahead of second-placed Bournemouth.

    Below are the breakdown:

    William Saliba

“On Willy [Saliba], there are two things related to his substitution,” Arteta began without unveiling either decisive factor. All that the Spanish boss would reveal was that the French centre back “had to be out after the first half.”

Saliba twisted his ankle at the end of August but was only forced to sit out one match—a comfortable 3–0 win over Nottingham Forest—while Cristhian Mosquera filled his hulking boots. The 21-year-old summer recruit was once again remarkably assured against Palace this weekend and may well have been called upon against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night even if Saliba was fit.

    Declan Rice

The sight of Rice willingly making his off the pitch is extremely rare. The industrious midfielder earned his nickname ‘The Horse’ thanks to “my ability to go again, my sustainability and availability to the team,” by his own reasoning. Yet, Arsenal’s stallion limped off inside the final 10 minutes on Sunday.

Rice isn’t being taken out back just yet. “Declan was struggling with a knock that he took from the first half,” Arteta revealed, though he couldn’t provide any precise detail on the nature or severity of this ailment.

    Riccardo Calafiori

Calafiori left the pitch against Palace at the same time as Rice and Arteta grouped their vague issues together. “Let’s see how they recover,” Arsenal’s manager shrugged. When pushed on any effort at specification Arteta sighed: “No, because I don’t know. It’s not because I don’t want to tell you, I don’t really know.”

Even if he did know, there’s no guarantee that Arteta would feed accurate information to the media. This is the same coach who has previously instructed injured players to stroll out of the team bus in their pregame kit to maintain the façade of their availability until the last possible moment.

Just this weekend, Arteta cast doubt over Gabriel’s involvement only to start the burly Brazilian and leave him on for the full 90 minutes.

    Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli replaced Bukayo Saka midway through the second half in a switch which would ultimately cause two minor panic attacks in the Arsenal fanbase. Saka is rarely taken off under any circumstances but Arteta was quick to quash any major concerns.

“Bukayo’s been ill and hasn’t really trained,” the Gunners coach revealed. “We didn’t know whether he was going to be fit, so he made a big effort to be available today.

“The doctor guided us to give us the best possible opportunity to be in the best condition. He managed to play a few minutes but the longer the game went on, he was getting too fatigued and risked injury. We didn’t want to take that risk.”

If the sight of some actual player welfare management was a refreshing development for Arteta, he also went against type with a (marginally) more concrete verdict on Martinelli’s health. The substitute “felt something” during his 25 minutes on the pitch but Arteta predicted that he would recover. “I think so,” he said. “We have to check that one. He was a bit uncomfortable.”

BREAKING NEWS: Arsenal confirmed four players are injured as scan shows TWO will be out till next season

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta didn’t offer many assurances when discussing the fitness concerns plaguing an ever-expanding slice of his squad.

On the face of it, Sunday’s 1–0 victory at home to Crystal Palace capped a perfect weekend. Eberechi Eze scored his first league goal for the Gunners in another defensively sound display as Arteta’s side moved clear of their wobbling challengers Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Premier League title is Arsenal’s to lose, in the eyes of many outside north London.

However, it was not an entirely faultless afternoon. William Saliba didn’t emerge for the second half after flagging some discomfort during the interval. Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori were also forced off while even substitute Gabriel Martinelli couldn’t escape the spread of niggles and aches. However, it was not an entirely faultless afternoon. “We marked Saka thinking he’s their best player but that destroyed our entire defence”: Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi names ONE Arsenal’s player who singlehandedly destroyed their entire defence today

Arsenal currently boast the “most influential player” in the Premier League who will be the front runner to win PFA Player of the Year if they claim the title this season, according to Jamie Carragher.

The Gunners continued their flying start to the campaign on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against London rivals Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium in which summer signing Eberechi Eze scored an acrobatic first-half winner against his former club.

It was a seventh straight win across all competitions that increased Arsenal’s early lead at the Premier League summit to four points over surprise package Bournemouth, on a weekend when reeling champions Liverpool suffered their fourth successive top-flight defeat at Brentford and Manchester City’s nine-match unbeaten run was ended by Aston Villa.

Mikel Arteta’s side are unbeaten in their last 10 games, with their only defeat so far this term coming at Anfield in August. Their 100 per cent start in the Champions League remains intact after three matches and they are also through to the Carabao Cup last 16, where they play Brighton on Wednesday.

Despite a significant summer transfer spend primarily focused on attacking recruits such as Eze, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke, Arsenal’s success and new-found position as strong favourites to claim a first title in 21 years has been built on a miserly defence that is on pace to break numerous records.

The Gunners have conceded only three goals in 13 matches so far this season, with City’s Erling Haaland still the only player to score against them from open play.

Key to that remarkable rearguard effort has been the partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel, the latter of whom recovered from a knock sustained in last week’s Champions League demolition of Atletico Madrid to start and play 90 minutes against Palace, heading back Declan Rice’s free-kick to the back post for Eze to inventively hammer home and also hitting the woodwork himself.

Carragher believes that the influential Brazilian’s impact defensively, as a leader and in terms of his attacking prowess at set-pieces makes him the most important player to his team anywhere in the Premier League, rising above Saliba at Arsenal.

“I think he’s now the real leader in this team,” Liverpool legend Carragher said of Gabriel on Sky Sports. “I think Saliba’s a fantastic player, I always felt Gabriel was maybe the junior partner if you like. I think that’s changed for me now.

“I think he’s a colossus at the back. He’s the leader for that team, he talks, he keeps Saliba in check at times in games. We’ve seen him defensively, but going forward at the other end, we’ve seen him for the goal, we’ve seen him hit the crossbar as well.

“This happens every game. He’s the best defender in the team that’s got the best defensive numbers and he’s the best attacker in terms of set-pieces going forward at the other end.

“That’s why for me, right now, I think Gabriel is the most influential player in the Premier League. I think if Arsenal are to go on and win the Premier League, and I know it’s early, he could be on course to go and win the PFA Player of the Year, or the player of the year from the football writers.

“Because right now, there is nobody more influential for Arsenal Football Club.”

Only three defenders have previously won PFA Player of the Year in the Premier League era, with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk the last to do it in 2018/19.

Chelsea legend John Terry did it in 2004/05, while Paul McGrath also won the award with Aston Villa back in 1992/93.

“I think if Arsenal go on and win the league, he’s the number one contender,” Carragher continued. “I look at those other three players, all great players and leaders for their clubs like Gabriel is.

“Actually, John Terry is the only one to win the Premier League in the year he won PFA Player of the Year. When you actually look at John Terry and Virgil van Dijk’s role, look at the goals.

“They are not just big leaders at the back, but the numbers of goals. His [Gabriel’s] record is actually far better than theirs when you look at those numbers.”
